Joshua 1:8 - Eat Some Bread! Resistance

Joshua 1:8

NKJV

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

NLT

Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

Resisting temptations…that’s a booger bear! This is where satan starts to look for footholds in our lives. We leave the door opened just a tiny little crack, thinking nobody can get through there; It won’t hurt if I give in just the one time. Unfortunately, that’s the thinking that can unravel your life in a hurry. The enemy doesn’t come at us with ugliness and consequences.  The enemy comes at us with justification. We say things that makes it ok for us to give in.

“it’s not hurting anybody”

“nobody will know”

“that’s my business and nobody else’s”

These, and statements like them, are our way of justifying that what we’re doing is ok. If I’m saying things like this…then I’m not being honest with myself or anyone else; or maybe I am being honest and I just don’t care.

Read these today:

Mathew 4:4

Job 23:12

Isaiah 55:2

Hosea 4:6

James 4:7

All of this comes down to resisting temptations and how we are to do it.  To be perfectly honest, it’s the simplest thing…it ain’t easy…but it’s simple.  Yesterday we were encouraged to eat some bread.  It’s the same today, eat some bread daily.  Study the word, know where your strength comes from.  The word tells us to submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee from us. Studying the word also fills our minds with something other than our temptation; for me it makes perfect sense.  I want so much of Jesus in me, that everything that is me…gets pushed out. Start today, read something in the bible today.

Mathew 4:4 - Are you Hangry? Eat some bread!

Mathew 4:4

NKJV

But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’

NLT

But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say,

‘People do not live by bread alone,

but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

I like bread, any way shape or form.  Loaf bread to biscuits and anything in between.  I like it with peanut butter on it; I like it with jelly on it; I like it with peanut butter and Jelly on it; I like it toasted…I like it in any form or fashion.  Unfortunately my love for bread, and sweets, but mostly bread has put me in a position that my doctor is requesting that I go on a low carb diet.  Which means I only get to eat breads in moderation, if at all.  The doctor, and my wife, would prefer not at all.

Thankfully, the bread we get from Jesus doesn’t cause those issues.  In fact, the more we “eat” the better we are!  What a deal!  So, before we get into the “bread” of this, take a minute and read the following:

Psalms 68:19

Exodus 16:4-5

Deuteronomy 8:3

John 6:48-58

Jesus was coming off of His 40 day fast in the wilderness, so He was hungry; hunger can make us do some things that we would not normally do.  I know for myself when I’m hungry…I get angry…hangry.  I snap and snarl like a wounded animal, at everyone who gets close to me.  So I cannot even imagine fasting from food for 40 days.

My question for you today is this:

Are you hangry in your walk with Christ?  Meaning, are you struggling through some things? Things that your hangry that you have to deal with?  Here’s the good news, you don’t have to be hangry.  We have access to this “bread” anytime we want it. God’s word is our daily bread, are you “eating” it every day?

Struggling with anger, eat some bread; with fear, eat some bread; with anxiety, eat some bread; struggling with gossip, eat some bread; struggling with pornography, eat some bread.  My point is, the answer to all our problems and issues are in God’s Word, we just have to read it.  Satan with come to you and tell you all kinds of lies; he’ll tell you every reason in the world to not dig into the word.  But Jesus defended Himself by what is written.  Think about this when (from the Enduring Word Commentary):

1.      What Satan suggested made sense – “Why starve yourself to death?” But what is written makes even more sense.

2.     “Hunger represents human wants, and the question was: whether Sonship was to mean exemption from these, or loyal acceptance of them as part of the Messiah’s experience.” (Bruce)

3.     It isn’t that Jesus refused supernatural help in feeding Himself; He was more than happy to eat what the angels brought Him when the time of testing was over (Matthew 4:11). It wasn’t a matter of refusing supernatural help; it was a matter of submitting to His Father’s timing and will in all things.

Ignore the lies of satan and dig in and eat some bread daily.  You know you need to do it, start anywhere, but start today.

Eatin’ bread,
